Vatican holds special mass for Iraqi Christians

VATICAN CITY, (AFP) – The Vatican on Thursday celebrated a special mass in honour of the victims of an attack on the main Syriac Catholic cathedral in Baghdad in which 46 worshippers and seven security officers died.

“Christians must be able to stay where they were born,” Leonardo Sandri, the cardinal in charge of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Eastern Churches, said in his sermon at the service in Saint Peter’s basilica.Sandri said earlier on Vatican Radio: “Christians in Iraq should be defended and their religious freedom should be protected.
“All people of good will… should work together, raise their voices and act in a concrete way in favour of our brothers,” he added.
The mass was attended by ambassadors and around 40 friends and relatives of people injured in the attack who are being treated in a hospital in Rome
