Christian churches in Iraq hit in bombing spree

A series of bombing attacks on Christians churches in Iraq has left at least 4 people dead and dozens wounded, and rekindled fears of a concerted assault on the Christian minority after the departure of American troops. In the capital city of Baghdad, 7 churches– Chaldean Catholic and Orthodox– were the targets of car bombings. In Mosul another church was targeted. Bishop Shlemon Warduni, a Baghdad auxiliary– whose church, St. Mary’s in Baghdad, was the site of the most deadly attack– said that the bombings were clearly coordinated, with ample advance planning.

The rash of bombings sparked fears of a new exodus by Iraqi Christians. Bishop Warduni spoke of the “mistrust and negativity” that infects the Christian community.
