Iraqi Christians start new life in Germany

BERLIN: More than 100 Iraqi Christians and other refugees have landed in Germany to seek a safer future.

Some of the adults had tears in their eyes as they got off a plane from Syria that landed in Hannover, Germany, on Thursday.

The group of about 120 people included single mothers and their children, and several sick people. One sick child was taken to receive medical attention.

Iraq’s Christian minority has faced years of violence and intimidation from Islamic extremists. The refugees are mostly Christians. But other religious minorities are included. They have been living in Syria.

Hundreds more refugees are to come to Hannover by the end of the year in an asylum program arranged by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and the German government.
