Foundation to expand Chaldean outreach in Detroit area

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) – A Sterling Heights-based foundation that helps Middle East immigrants and refugees learn English, find jobs, become citizens and access health care in the Detroit area is expanding its services by building a new community center.
The Detroit News reports ( http://detne.ws/1Q1TzYU ) that the Chaldean Community Foundation helped more than 16,000 immigrants and refugees last year. About 150,000 Chaldeans live in southeast Michigan, making it the second-largest Chaldean community in the world.

The foundation moves into an 11,500-square-foot location on Friday from a cramped office it’s had since 2011. It makes the move as it prepares for an influx of Middle East refugees.

The center is expected to help 20,000 people annually. The foundation will be able to house all of its social and health services there and provide more room for its 23-member staff.
