Timz—aka Tommy Hanna, an American born rapper of Chaldean and Iraqi descent—continues to make heads turn across the world with his explosive, eye-opening anti-war music video Iraq. MTV has selected the politically charged video to be amongst the potential nominees for its ‘Video of the Year’ category in this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Timz gets right up in our faces, mixing Middle Eastern tinged beats with provocative rhymes in an effort to shatter those ugly stereotypes that have plagued people who look like him since the start of the Iraq war. Little did Timz know that his gripping imagery and heavy rap grooves would ignite an underground anti-war movement where computer streamed video and blogging would replace the college campus demonstrations of wars past.

Timz’s Iraq has received more than half a million hits on the popular YouTube.com where it was the #1 featured video. It has since then been covered by international media outlets such as MTV, FOX News, Al Jazeera, Canal+ France and Russian National TV amongst many others. Timz’s captivating story and sound has the controversial rapper from San Diego, CA going head to head with music industry heavyweights such as Lil’ Wayne, 50 Cent and Britney Spears for the MTV Video Music Award. Timz is amongst the very few to grace the coveted ‘Video of the Year’ category with no record label support.

Iraq appears on Timz’s debut album, Open for Business; a fiery and autobiographical release that garnered a “Best Hip Hop Album” nomination at the San Diego Music Awards. Iraq was the winner of the Hollywood Film Festival award for ‘Best Music Video’ and Timz is hopeful that a potential MTV award may help bring his story and music further into the mainstream.
