Iraqi state TV is reporting government forces have entered the Anbar province capital of Ramadi from its western outskirts, after clearing mines and other booby traps laid by Islamic State militants.VOA could not independently confirm the extent of the Iraqi advance.

The victims, members of the Albu Nimr tribe, were executed on Sunday in the Tharthar area north of Ramadi, the capital of the western Anbar province, tribal elder Naim Gaoud told AFP.

A week ago, a statement by the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said the new agreement aimed at “assisting and participating in collecting information about Daesh (IS group) and its associates”.

Possibly as many as 300 of the tribe’s members were killed around a year ago, when anti-IS forces were still holding out in a few parts of Ramadi, which is the Albu Nimr’s main hub.

Xinhua news agency, quoting Gaoud, reports the dead were civilians whose fathers and brothers joined army, police and paramilitary units fighting IS forces in the town of Barwana, near Haditha.

Iraqi officials, including Assadi and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, had said immediately after IS fighters blitzed the security forces out of Ramadi in mid-May that a reconquest would be a matter of days.

“The US-led coalition remains committed to working with its Iraqi partners in operations to degrade and destroy Da’esh in Anbar province and throughout Iraq”, the United States embassy in Iraq stressed.

Daesh have been carrying atrocities including public decapitations against all communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Christians and Kurds.
