Vatican calls on Metro Detroit Catholic leaders for special meeting on Middle East

Oralandar Brand-Williams / The Detroit NewsDetroit — Catholic Archbishop Allen Vigneron of Detroit and Catholic bishop Ibrahim N. Ibrahim of the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle in Southfield have been summoned to Rome to participate in a special synod on the Middle East at the Vatican, Archdiocese of Detroit officials announced this morning.
During the special 14-day meeting that begins Sunday, representatives of Sunni and Shi’ite branches of Islam will speak.
Also attending will be: Rabbi David Rosen, director for inter-religious affairs of the American Jewish Committee and Heilbrunn Institute for International Inter-religious for Understanding in Israel; Muhammad al-Sammak, political counselor to the Grand Mufti of Lebanon for Sunni Islam; and Ayatollah Seyed Mostafa Mohaghegh Ahmadabadi, professor at the Faculty of Law at the Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran and Member of the Iranian Academy of Sciences for Shia Islam, according to the Vatican Information Services’ news office.
The purpose of the synod, a council, is to address the plight of Christians in the Middle East.
Ned McGrath, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Detroit, said Vigneron is “honored to be among the American prelates chosen.”
“(He) considers the appointment of himself and Ibrahim a blessing and recognition of Detroit’s Eastern and Latin Rite Churches,” McGrath said.
More than 200 religious leaders will be joined by 70 experts and auditors for the event. The theme of this year’s synod is: “The Catholic Church in the Middle East: Communion and Witness. Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul.”
This is the second time in a week that local Catholic leaders have been involved in a major event at the Vatican. An ordination to archbishop was scheduled for the Rev. Joseph Tobin, a Detroit native and former pastor at Holy Redeemer.
