Baghdad, 01 September 2013 – The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, strongly condemns today’s tragic events in Camp Ashraf, which reportedly led to the killing and injuring of several camp residents.

“The priority for the Iraqi government is to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured and to ensure their security and safety against any violence from any side”, Mr. Busztin said.

The UN Envoy also called on the Government of Iraq to quickly set up a board of inquiry to establish the facts and disclose the circumstances surrounding today’s events.

“UNAMI, under its humanitarian mandate, is closely following up on developments on the ground, and is using all possible means to conduct its own assessment of the situation”, Mr. Busztin concluded.
