San Diego County sees influx of Iraqi refugees

The Associated Press
SAN DIEGO—San Diego County took in well over 2,000 Iraqi refugees in the last fiscal year, a record intake for an area that has become a haven for war-weary Iraqis.
The Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, which is heading the resettlement effort, says 2,356 Iraqis arrived in the region and another 3,600 are expected in the county this year.

Most of the refugees are Christians and most are settling in eastern San Diego County.

The Catholic charity estimates that more than 30,000 Iraqis—mainly Kurds and Chaldeans—live in the county.
