 Sydney – 12 December 2008
A representative from the Assyrian Universal Alliance (AUA) and the Assyrian Australian National Federation met with The Honorable Malcolm Turnbull MP, Leader of the opposition, on Friday 12 December 2008. The delegates attending the meeting were; Mr. Hermiz Shahen, Deputy Secretary General, Regional Secretary of the Assyrian Universal Alliance in Australian & New Zealand; Mr. David M. David, President of the Assyrian Australian National Federation, Executive Board member of the Assyrian Universal Alliance and Mr. Paul Azzo a Liberal member, an active member in the Assyrian community and an adviser to the Assyrian Universal Alliance image002.jpgon Australian affairs
The delegation briefed The Honorable Malcolm Turnbull on the latest development in Iraq and the neglect of the Assyrian issue after the liberation. The Assyrian Universal Alliance presented the Opposition Leader with a detailed letter about the current situation in Iraq. As a matter of urgency and importance, the delegates requested support from the Australian Government for a number of issues including the establishment of an autonomous Assyrian region in the historical Assyrian land in Northern Iraq, in which Assyrians can administer themselves and live in peace as proud Iraqi citizens in the image003.jpgland of their forefathers.
Mr. Turnbull was aware of the problems facing the Christian Assyrians. He assured the delegates that he will take this matter very seriously.
The Assyrian Universal Alliance – Australian Chapter, wish to thank Mr. Paul Azzo for his unrelenting commitment to our cause and his dedicated efforts to organise all the meetings held in the past seven years. We hope that this meeting achieves positive outcomes for the interest and needs of our Assyrian people in Iraq.
