Nineveh Christians: One Year In Dislodgment

West Bloomfield, MI and Washington, D.C.– The Iraqi Christians Advocacy and Empowerment Institute (ICAE) somberly marks the one year anniversary of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) takeover of ancient Nineveh Province including Nineveh plain in Northern Iraq, and the more than 800.000 Christians and Yazidies who were displaced in Kurdistan-Iraq, or forced to seek refuge in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey.
“One year ago, we and the entire world watched in horror the ISIS barbaric capture of Nineveh and later on the ancient Nineveh Plain which is considered the heartland of Christianity in the area. They targeted its population, including its ancient and diverse religious communities who were cruelly driven out of their homes as their churches and shrines destroyed, their archeological monuments, and ancient theological scripts ruined in an effort to erase their religion, history, and culture identity leading to a “cultural genocide,” said Joseph T. Kassab, ICAE Institute President and Founder. “Those who were unable to flee the captured area have experienced forced conversion to Islam, kidnapping, killing, rape, brutal torture and their women sold as sex slaves to others”.
ICAE continues to urge the International Community with special focus on the US Administration to have clear strategy and foreign policy towards Iraq to liberate, protect, and to empower its vulnerable diverse communities like the Christians. “ICAE is aggressively advocating for providing the most needed humanitarian relief for the persecuted and the displaced in and outside Iraq as it continues to provide solutions for a protected and safe haven for the displaced to return and/or provide safe passage for refugees whom decided not to return to their homes anymore. In addition, ICAE calls for the restoring of their ethno-religious right, claim back and rebuild their lost properties, and to ensure their fare share of Iraq’s revenues in order to better develop their areas and built sustainable community” said Kassab.
