Meeting with Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz

Ziyad Raoof and Kazimierz NyczIn response to stance of president Masoud Barzani, appeal of prime minister Nechirvan Barzani and due to tragic situation of Christians, who are forced to flee from Mosul to Kurdistan region, on Tuesday 5 of August Ziyad Raoof Representative of Kurdistan Regional Government to Poland had another meeting with one of the most important Polish hierarchs of Catholic Church – Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz, Metropolitan Archbishop of Warsaw.

At the beginning of meeting Ziyad Raoof passed to Cardinal detailed report about recent developments and he explained reasons of current crisis and the most dramatic situation of Christians in the history of their existence in region. Representative of Kurdistan Regional Government to Poland gave latest news about fate of Christians, who are fleeing from Mosul and other areas of Iraq to Kurdistan. Ziyad Raoof expressed the stance of President Masoud Barzani, Kurdistan Regional Government and Kurdish society towards recent developments. KRG Representative also expressed openness to receive Christians on territory of Kurdistan and willingness to make every effort to provide assistance needed by refugees. At the same time he drew attention to fact that size of tragedy and number of refugees, not only Christians but also Syrian refugees and Iraqi Arabs from Sunni areas, puts Kurdistan Regional Government in a difficult situation. In spite of goodwill and best intentions in the long term Kurds will not be able to provide necessary support to refugees without external aid.

Cardinal assured that at the next national meeting of all bishops this topic will be discussed and decision about form of aid for refugees will be taken. He also declared that bishops will ask Caritas – the largest charitable institution in Poland to take care of organization of aid. Cardinal expressed his solidarity with suffering Iraqi Christians, whom he will support both spiritually and materially.
