SAN DIEGO — Iraqi leaders announced Sunday that San Diego was selected along with Detroit to be the home of two new Iraqi consulates in the United States.

“We chose those two cities because they have large number of Iraqi communities,” Iraq’s deputy foreign minister Labid Abbawi told the Associated Press.

Details such as where the consulate might be located haven’t been announced yet, but Abbawi told the Los Angeles Times that the consulate should be open before the end of the year
San Diego County is home to hundreds of Iraqi-Americans, including a large Christian Chaldean community in El Cajon.
