Assyrian American Civic Club, Chamber to honor former mayor
An evening to honor John Lazar will take place on Jan. 17 at the Assyrian American Civic Club.
John Lazar’s eight year term as mayor of Turlock may have come to a close, but his imprint on Turlock is long enduring which is why the Assyrian American Club is partnering with the Turlock Chamber of Commerce to spend an evening recognizing his contributions to the community.

“It’s a dinner in recognition of John Lazar for all of his years of service,” said event emcee and coordinator Carmen Morad. “We will recognize the man, the leader and the true champion for Turlock.”

Prior to leading Turlock for two terms, Lazar served on the Turlock City Council for a total of 22 years in local government, predated by his time as a page in Washington, D.C. as a young man. With a vibrant interest in politics, Assyrian American Civic Club President Sam David said that Lazar’s commitment to government is something to be recognized.

“Politics is a roller coaster, so for someone to dedicate his time and efforts for 22 years is significant,” said David. “We just wanted to take time to thank him for all he has done.”

However, Lazar is a bit more averse to the recognition.

“I’m looking forward to the event, but frankly I’d rather be an attendee than the honoree,” said Lazar. “But really, I’m very honored.”

The Chamber of Commerce and the Assyrian American Civic Club are partnering to bring several dignitaries and speakers to the evening which will include a dinner and entertainment.

The evening to honor Lazar will take place on Jan. 17. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for hors d’oeuvres, dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with the presentation to follow at 8 p.m. Table sponsorships for nine chairs per table are available for $300 and individual tickets are $30.Those interested in purchasing tickets can contact Carmen Morad at 681-7433 or by emailing lazarrecognitionprogramaaccot@yahoo.com.
