Aleppo bishop fears Christian exodus

The Chaldean Catholic Bishop of the Syrian town of Aleppo has warned that the escalating violence there could lead to a mass exodus of Christians as it did in the town of Homs earlier this year. In Aleppo Christians make up 25 per cent of the 2.1 million population.

“What we are afraid of is that in this situation of anarchy, armed people will come into Christian areas as they did in Homs,” he said.

Caritas agencies in Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon are assisting refugees flooding into their countries.

Fr Nawras Sammour of the Jesuit Refugee Service, who co-ordinates three refugee centres, said that most Syrians have not been drawn into supporting either one side or the other. He added: “All Syrians are suffering, without any discrimination.”
