Chaldean Community Panel Discuss “Crossing the Lines” of Culture in Metro Detroit

WDET and the Chaldean News partnered last night to co-host a cultural community meeting at the Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield. The meeting, which was part of WDET’s ongoing Crossing the Lines project — looking at the various ways Metro Detroit comes together and divides itself — focused on a community united by culture rather than geographic confines.

Burt Kassab, board member of the Bank of Michigan; Jane Shallal, executive director of the Chaldean American Ladies of Charity; Al Zara, founder of Geektown USA and candidate for office in West Bloomfield and Vanessa Denha Garmo, Co-publisher and Editor in Chief of the Chaldean News join Craig to discuss some of the important topics discussed at last night’s meeting.

Nearly 50 people came out to discuss the perceptions, stereotypes and local issues that concern the Chaldean community. Metro Detroit is home to approximately 130,000 Chaldean individuals — making it one of the largest Chaldean populations in the United States.
