The Assyrian New Year is a favourite time for Fairfield’s Assyrian community.
MORE than 10,000 people are expected to converge at Fairfield Showground on Sunday to ring in the Assyrian New Year with colour, music and a flurry of activity.

Jointly presented by the Assyrian Australian National Federation and the Assyrian Universal Alliance, the event will include live entertainment, drama performances, food, variety stalls, children’s activities, an exhibition by the Young Assyrians Group and a fireworks display.

The Assyrian New Year is an important day for Assyrian communities worldwide and marks the first day of the ancient Babylonian calendar year.

Hermiz Shahen from the Assyrian Universal Alliance said communities from all backgrounds were encouraged to join in with the festivities.

“Event organisers hope to highlight and strengthen cultural heritage by continuing a celebration which dates back more than 6000 years,” he said.
