Syriac patriarch calls for effective representation

BEIRUT: Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignatius Joseph III Younan said that the Syriac community should be allowed effective political representation in the country in accordance with the principle of equality among Lebanese.

“The rights of the Syriacs and their representation should be ensured in accordance with Syriac history and presence in the country and in line with the principle of equality between the country’s citizens,” said Younan in a Christmas message delivered Wednesday.

According to some estimates, there are over 30,000 Syriac Lebanese living in the country but they share a single seat in Parliament with five other small Christian sects.

Younan also urged officials to work in the service of the people and follow their national conscience in dealing with public affairs.
