Mangalore: Jacobite Syrian Metropolitan Polycarpose Geevarghese Passes away

Mangalore, Mar 7: Metrolitan Polycarpose Geevarghese (78) of the Evangelistic Association of the East ( EAE ) and St. Antony’s Mission ( Honnavar Mission ) passed away passed away in a hospital in Iritty in Kannur on Sunday, Mar 6.

He was born in 1933 in Mulanilkunnathil House (Nadayil Kudumbam of the Chennithala Horeb Church) Chennithala, Mavelikkara, Kerala.

He was ordained deacon in 1956 and priest in 1957. He was consecrated Cor-Episcopos in 1978 during which timehe served the Evangelistic Association of the East.

He was consecrated Metropolitan in 1990 as bishop of Evangelistic Association of the East at Damascus. He had his higher education in Syrian.

He held the post of patron and president of the Evangelistic Association of the East (E.A.E), the first Missionary Association of the Syriac Orthodox Church, under the direct control of the Patriarch of Antioch and all the East.

Although born in Kerala, the Metropolitan had worked most of his life in Karnataka. So he was well-versed in many languages including Tulu, Konkani, Kannada, Hindi and English.

He had founded many Jacobite Syrian churches in DK, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Hassan and northern Kerala districts. He had contributed a lot towards the uplift of the rural people. He had built 46 churches, 3 high schools, 2 junior colleges and over 20 primary schools in different parts of Kerala and Karnataka.

Funeral ceremony of Mor Polycarpose will be held on at 2 pm on Wednesday, March 9 in St. Antony’s Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Cathedral, Jeppu, Mangalore.

Catholicos Aboon Mor Baselios Thomas I will lead the funeral ceremonies. All metropolitans of Syriac Orthodox Church in India will attend.

Mor Chrisostomose Markose and Mor Anthonios Yakoob are already present there in the cathedral now. Large groups of followes, priests and nuns are flocking at the Cathedral.
