Christian leader appointed adviser for north Iraq’s Ninewa’s Governor for Minorities
 NINEWA / Aswat al-Iraq: A leader in the Christian Assyrian Democratic Movement has been appointed as adviser for northern Iraq’s Ninewa Province for Minorities Affairs, a source close to Ninewa’s Province said on Thursday.
“The leader in the Assyrian Democratic Movement, Dr.Duraid Hikmat, has received his position on Wednesday in Ninewa Province’s Council, as adviser for its Governor for Minorities Affairs,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
He said that Ninewa Governor, Athil al-Nijeifi, belonging to the “National al-Hadbaa” Bloc, had “instructed the Christian Leader to follow up the affairs of the minorities in Ninewa Province and to present detailed reports about their conditions, in order to find solutions to improve them.”
Ninewa Province, witnessing security tension and continuous attacks since 2005, comprises several national, religious and sectarian components, including the Christian component, dating back to ancient historic eras in the city of Mosul, the center of Ninewa and in different areas of the Province, especially in its northeastern areas, where several Christian townships and villages exist.
Noteworthy is that thousands of Christians have left Mosul over the past few years, due to threats and attacks launched against them by extremist armed groups, that caused hundreds of victims among them.
Ninewa Province is home for Sunni Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians and Chaldians Christians, Yezidis and Shabaks.
Mosul, the center of Ninewa Province, is 405 kms to the north of Baghdad.
