New Zealanders caught up in Gallipoli dispute

gallipoli-600.jpgPlans for a major archaeological survey of the battlegrounds of Gallipoli are on hold due to a dispute between Australia and Turkey about a monument in Sydney.

New Zealand, Australian and Turkish historians and archaeologists were supposed to start work next Friday, to provide detailed information about military sites at Gallipoli.

But Turkey was withholding cooperation until the dispute is settled, Radio New Zealand reported.

Turkey objects to a monument built in Sydney, which commemorates almost three quarters of a million people, who Assyrians say were massacred during and after World War 1.

Turkey says the figures are exaggerated and the deaths stemmed from military conflict — not genocide
