Assyrians chief writes to Leader condemning desecration of Quran

Tehran Times Political Desk
TEHRAN – International Union of Assyrians Secretary General Yonatan Bet Kolia has submitted a letter to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei strongly condemning the desecration of the holy Quran.

Bet Kolia, the representative of the Assyrian and Chaldean Christian communities in the Iranian parliament, expressed regret over the unfortunate incident in which the “enemies of God” have committed sacrilegious acts toward “words of God”.

The Assyrian communities are extremely infuriated that the perpetrators of this flagrant violation have desecrated the Quran in the name of Christians and Christianity, the Fars News Agency reported on Wednesday.

He welcomed the Leader’s statement in which he totally exonerated the Christian community of the desecration of the Quran and described it as a Zionist plot.

Terry Jones, the pastor of the Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center church, had intended to set the Quran on fire on Saturday to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks against the United States but cancelled his plan due to international pressure and criticism.

However, a copy of the Quran was burned by a U.S. citizen on Sunday
