Assyrian Martyrs Day Observed in Sweden’s Assyrian Capital

ninosmaraha1.jpgSödertälje, Sweden (AINA) — Nearly two hundred Assyrians commemorated Assyrian Martyrs Day at a ceremony at the Saint Jacob of Nisibin Assyrian Orthodox cathedral in Södertälje on Sunday. Several Assyrian associations sponsored the program, which included speeches, poetry and patriotic songs.
A number of local politicians were also present, including City mayor Anders Lago. Assyrian politicians Yilmaz Kerimo and Ninos Maraha directed their speeches towards the upcoming Swedish national elections and the need of Assyrians to use their democratic right and vote.
The ceremony was held both in western and eastern Assyrian dialects. Södertälje, a city of 80,000 thirty miles south of Stockholm, is home to 35,000 Assyrians
