On 19 February 2009, a delegation representing the Assyrian Universal Alliance – Australian Chapter and the Assyrian Australian National Federation met with The Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Assistant Treasurer, Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs at his office in the Commonwealth building in Sydney.

The delegates in attendance were: Mr. Hermiz Shahen; Deputy Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance and regional secretary of Australia & New Zealand, Mr. David M. David; President of the Assyrian Australian National Federation and Executive Member of the Assyrian Universal Alliance and Mr. Paul Azzo; Adviser to the Assyrian Universal Alliance on Governmental Issues.
A number of issues were raised with the Minister including the current situation of the Assyrians in Iraq, the deteriorating situation of the Assyrian refugees in the surrounding countries such as Jordan, Syria and Lebanon and the mounting number of threats facing their future if their demands for autonomous region in their historical land in Northern Iraq is not granted by the Iraqi government.

The delegates also informed the Minister about the intention of the Assyrian Universal Alliance to hold their 26th world congress in Sydney Australia during the month of May 2009.
On behalf of the Assyrian Universal Alliance-Australian Chapter and the Assyrian Australian community we thank The Hon. Chris Bowen MP, for taking time despite his busy schedule to meet with the Assyrian delegation and for his outstanding efforts over the years in raising the Assyrian issue with the Australian Government.

On Tuesday morning 24th February, 2009 the delegates also attended a meeting with Mr. Ninos Khoshaba MP. at his office in Smithfield, seeking his assistance for a number of issues including preparation for the upcoming Assyrian Universal Alliance Congress. The delegates thanked Mr. Khoshaba MP for his time and expressed their gratitude for the assistance provided for the delegation
