Iraq: Bomb targets army convoy in north

(AKI) – An Iraqi army soldier was injured on Friday in a blast that targeted an army convoy in the northern city of Mosul, a security source told the Voices of Iraq news agency. “An improvised explosive device went off on Friday targeting a convoy…of the Iraqi army in the al-Shifaa neighbourhood in western Mosul…injuring a soldier,” VOI cited the source as saying.

The explosion destroyed a military vehicle, the source added. added.

Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province, lies 405 kilometres north of Baghdad. Unidentified gunmen last October killed four newly-recruited policemen and injured four others during a shooting in the city.

Anti-Christian violence in erupted the same month in Mosul, which is home to the second-largest community of Christians in Iraq after Baghdad.

A spate of threats and killings prompted around 400 Christian families to flee the city, although many subsequently returned.
