ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraqi Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri on Saturday said the Parliament would submit an official letter to the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) to ensure transparency in the recent elections process.

Jabouri called on the IHEC to take all the necessary measures which guarantee confidence in the elections process that took place in the country on May 12.

One such measure is the manual recounting of votes at random ballot stations, he noted in an official statement.

The Parliament Speaker also asked for criminal cases of suspected misbehavior to be sent to the related authorities.

Jabouri emphasized the importance of matching data at several random ballot boxes and called on the IHEC’s judiciary committee to deal with the appeals carefully and impartially.

“The IHEC’s legal committee should follow-up on the electoral process and investigate the issues mentioned by some parties as well as follow-up on the elections process in Kirkuk Province and the Christians’ quota seats,” he concluded.

Jabouri’s statement comes after the Parliament failed to hold an emergency session on Saturday meant to discuss the results of the recent parliamentary elections after failing to achieve a quorum.

The Parliament Speaker was forced to turn the meeting into “a deliberative session” which “examined the repercussions of the election results, and accusations of fraud,” a parliamentary official was quoted as saying by Reuters.
