Iraq Catholics still wary of security despite deal

NICOSIA, Cyprus: A new security deal to keep U.S. forces in Iraq may not be enough to lure back Christians who have fled Baghdad, the leader of Iraq’s Roman Catholics said Monday.

The agreement allowing American troops to stay in Iraq for three more years still requires approval by Iraq’s parliament.

Archbishop Jean Benjamin Sleiman said many Iraq’s estimated 400,000 Christians still wish to flee their country.

“If there is peace, many will come back,” Sleiman told an interfaith conference being held in Cyprus.

He said Iraqi Christians were more concerned about security than other religious groups
