Iraq: UN envoy condemns killing of Christian women

BAGHDAD (AP) — The main United Nations envoy in Iraq has condemned the killing of two Christian sisters in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

Staffan de Mistura “expressed his shock and outrage at the continued targeting and killing of religious minorities” in a statement issued Wednesday.

Iraqi police say the two women were killed by unidentified assailants Tuesday as they were waiting in front of their house for a ride to work. Their mother was wounded in the attack.

The U.S. military has confirmed the killings and says the Christian family’s house was then destroyed by bombs planted inside.

The attack comes after about 13,000 Christians fled Mosul last month in the face of threats and attacks from extremists. Some families have started returning to the city but tensions linger.
