Chaldean synod begins

  • Written by:

The bishops of the Chaldean Catholic Church began a week-long synod in Erbil, Iraq, on September 22.
Patriarch Louis Raphael I Sako told AsiaNews that the synod would examine the situation in the Chaldean eparchy of San Diego, which has accepted priests and religious who have left Iraq without permission from their superiors. The Wall Street Journal has published a report on the conflicts within the large Chaldean community in California: a conflict between the desire to help refugees escape from danger in Iraq and the determination of the Chaldean patriarchate to preserve the Christian witness in that country.

The synod will also discuss the liturgy, the political situation in Iraq, and the beatification of various Chaldean martyrs.
