Statement by the Head of the EU Delegation and Heads of all EU Member State Embassies accredited to Iraq
The Head of the EU (European Union) Delegation and Heads of all EU Member State Embassies accredited to the Republic of Iraq meet with Speaker H.E. Salim Al-Jubouri to welcome recent adoption of the Amnesty Law in line with Parliament’s legislative agenda

Baghdad, Iraq – 31 August 2016 –

The European Union and its Member States welcome the latest progress in the Iraqi Parliament’s legislative agenda notably the recent adoption of the Banning of the Ba’ath Party Law together with the adoption last week by the Council of Representatives of the Amnesty Law in accordance with the National Political Accord of 2014 and the Government of Iraq Programme.

The latest development towards consolidating state building is considered critical for promoting national reconciliation efforts at a time when Da’esh is being comprehensively defeated on the battlefield and the process of growing interdependence is being realized amongst the Iraqi people.

The European Union and its Member States encourage the Iraqi authorities to build upon the momentum achieved by the adoption of these two important pieces of legislation and to take additional steps towards further strengthening the rule of law in Iraq through delivery of the Justice and Accountability law in a timely manner.

Yesterday morning, the Head of the EU Delegation, H.E. Mr Patrick Simonnet together with other Ambassadors and representatives from the EU’s 28 member countries met with the Speaker, Dr. Salim Al-Jubouri and congratulated him and the Legislature for their collective efforts in striving to finally make real the General Amnesty Law
