At the invitation of the Iraqi Christians Advocacy and Empowerment Institute (ICAE), more than 40 Iraqi Christians , and other minority leaders, community activists, clergy, and local media participated in a candid discussion with ICAE guest speaker and friend of the community; the Honorable U.S. Senator Gary Peters.
Peters first spoke on the findings of his recent visit to Iraq where he met with many Iraqi government and religious leaders including the Christians and on his visit to the refugee camps in the area.
Peters genuinely answered all of the concerns of the attendees including: the vulnerable state of minorities in Iraq, the safe return of the displaced people after creating a protective zone,
the quick resettlement of refugee who do not want to go back home anymore, and providing immediate and comprehensive humanitarian relief.
Peters also recommended to build better Iraq by suggesting that its government must be all inclusive to include not only Sunni and Shia but to include representatives of the Ethno-Religious minority groups and that its revenues should fairly shared with all people of Iraq.
It is imperative to mention that recently, Senator Peters worked on some initiatives to help alleviate the suffering of our people in the region which ranged from:
1- Writing letter to President Obama asking to admit more refugees from the region,
2- Joining his colleagues in the US Senate in requesting Homeland Security Dept. to share its refugee vetting process,
3- Requesting the US Senate appropriation committee to consider emergency supplemental legislation to fund humanitarian efforts in the Middle East.
We are very much grateful for Senator Peters good work.
