Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, has offered his “profound sympathy” to the head of the Chaldean Catholic Church for the “unbearable and barbaric persecution” suffered by Christians and other religious minorities.

In his response, Patriarch Louis Raphaël I Sako said that “our Christian community in Iraq has endured massacres and other human rights abuses … We are consider[ing] it a kind of genocide.”

The patriarch called upon Prince Charles to use his influence and “encourage the international community” to act.
