The faithful of Assyrian Church taking out a procession in Thrissur on Wednesday in view of the funeral rites of Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East Mar Dinkha IV in Chicago | Ajesh Madhav
THRISSUR: Hundreds of faithful here attended the special mass held at Assyrian Churches here in view of the mourning ceremony of Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East, Mar Dinkha IV.

Dinkha, 79, had died at a hospital in Minnesota on March 26 and his funeral was held at Ankara in Chicago, USA, on Wednesday on IST 7.30 pm.At Marth Maraim Big Church (Chaldean Syrian Church) here, special prayers coinciding with the funeral were conducted from 7 am.

Later, the cultural leaders and devotees took out a procession through the Swaraj Round to pay homage to Mar Dinkha, who is known as the Pope of the Assyrian Church of East.Special prayers were also held at Mar Yohannam Mamdana Church at East Fort Thrissur, Mar Aprem Church Chelakkotukara, Mar Adhai Sleeha Church, Paravattani, Mar Augin Thoovana Church, West Fort, Thrissur and Mar Mari Sleeha Church, Kuriachira. Mar Dinkha IV had visited Thrissur in 2010 to participate in the Synod of the Assyrian Church.

The mourning procession reached the Marth Maraim Big Church which later telecast the funeral rites in the US live on a big screen.

Patriarch Dinkha was consecrated on October 17, 1976 as the 111th Patriarch and served 39 years in his post.

Patriarch Dinkha was born in Iraq on September 15, 1935. He was appointed to the ministry in Urmia, Iran. He was consecrated as bishop on February 11, 1962.
