A decision on proposed new wording on a controversial plaque commemorating an Australian soldier who protected Assyrian refugees in World War I has been deferred.

Councillors considered the wording, which concerns the actions of Lt-Gen Stanley George Savige.

But they voted to defer the matter to allow further consideration of wording provided by the Assyrian Levies Association. The Department of Veterans Affairs, NSW RSL, the Department of Defence, the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Australian War Memorial had all approved the new wording.

The Department of Veterans Affairs had questioned the accuracy of the original vandalised plaque, stating: “This information is not referenced in the relevant volume of the official history.”
