Slain Mechanic Laid to Rest

The pews were packed inside St. Peter’s Chaldean Catholic Church as friends and family gathered to say goodbye to Jalal Abou, 63.

Abou’s nephew spoke for the family.

“It’s a loss for the whole community. Everyone loves him, everyone likes him. He’s an amazing guy,” said Ayad Kiete.

The 63-year-old, who is originally from Baghdad, was married and had a son and two daughters. He moved to San Diego from Iraq in 1974 and then opened his own business, Joe’s Auto Repair, about ten years ago.

It was in the parking lot of that business that he lost his own life.

Abou was shot several times outside the shop at 1930 Rosecrans St. at about 7:25 a.m. last Tuesday.

The gunman got away.

“The only thing we say is he can rest in peace after we find the killer,” said Kiete.
So far there is no known motive.

“We feel really sad,” said Kiete. “I am very speechless to be honest. I am very speechless.”

Homicide detectives are searching for a male suspect described as having short-cropped hair and driving a dark-colored sedan.
