The Chaldean Catholic Church Patriarch Louis Raphaël I Sako of Babylon talks to Anne-Bénédicte Hoffner about the need for education and reconstruction in Iraq.

What stage has reconstruction of Christian villages in the Nineveh plains reached? Are we talking about a “resurrection” of Christianity in its historic birthplace?

Patriarch Louis Raphaël I Sako: The first time I went back to Mosul after the fall of ISIS in July 2017, I went to visit my old parish of Saint Paul. A Muslim neighbor asked me when we were going to rebuild the church. I told him that first of all we had to rebuild our people. When I say that, I’m talking about all Mosul residents, Christians and Muslims alike. They lived side by side for a long time here. Now they have been forced to question it: What does God and what do others expect from us? If we all approached conversion in this way, the world would be a very different place…
