Obama administration officials fear that the Islamic State is planning an “on-camera slaughter of major proportions” after kidnapping hundreds of Christians in Syria, according to the New York Post.
Even as reports surfaced that 19 of the captive Christian Assyrians had been freed by the militants, a U.S. official said authorities are concerned that ISIS could stage a mass execution and put the resulting horrifying video on the Internet.

“What is very disconcerting is that they rounded up all of these people, and we know from experience that they usually kill their captives on film and in the most brutal fashion,” the official said.

The number of Assyrians seized by ISIS last week has reportedly been between 220 and 300.

Referring to the 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians killed recently in Libya, the official added, “Remember, they’ve already gone from beheading one person on camera to, most recently, beheading 21 people on camera.”

The warning came as Pope Francis led a massive pray at St. Peter’s Square in Rome for the kidnapped Christians, while urging the world to take action to prevent more deaths.

“Everyone, in line with their possibilities, [should] act to alleviate the suffering,” the Pontiff said.

Although it was not known why ISIS allegedly freed 19 hostages, The Associated Press said that they were all 50 years or older, suggesting that age was a likely reason.

Bashir Saedi, a senior official in the Assyrian Democratic Organization, said that 16 men and three women arrived safely Sunday at the Church of the Virgin Mary in the city of Hassakeh.

He said they were all from the village of Tal Ghoran in northeast Syria and had traveled by bus from the ISIS-held town of Shaddadeh, south of Hassakeh.

The Assyrian Human Rights Network also reported the release, and published photographs on its Facebook page that it said taken from Hassakeh showing a crowd dressed in winter coats greeting the returnees.

The network said the captives had been ordered released by a Shariah court after paying an unspecified amount of money levied as a tax on non-Muslims.

Another US military official also told the Post that the administration said there were various scenarios awaiting the captive Christians.

“One is enslavement, which consists of cooking, cleaning and digging holes for [ISIS] soldiers on the front lines,” the official said. “And then of course, there’s the scenario involving executions. That’s our greatest fear.”
